USAID Indonesia Clean Energy Development II (USAID ICED II) held a 2-day training in Medan from July 30-31, 2019 on advanced rural electrification planning for 46 staff from the Energy Office of North Sumatra Provincial Government and the State Electricity Company (PLN) Regional Office of North Sumatra. Representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) attended as observers. The training served to consolidate and synchronize electrification data from various sources in supporting the assessment of electricity access in the province by both provincial government and PLN. During the training, the participants learned how to combine tabular statistical data and geospatial maps to visualize electricity access data, and identify clusters of buildings, such as households and communal facilities, to determine the appropriate types and configurations of rural electrification systems. The training also provided the participants with a tool to engage key stakeholders in constructive dialogues and collaborative works towards expanding electricity access. As the follow up to this training, PLN Regional Office of North Sumatra requested more intensive support for rural electrification planning in their priority areas based on the supplemental national budget allocation. This training is part of a training series in rural electrification planning for North Sumatra province, which started with updating the province’s spatial map of 20 kilovolt network in April 2018 and electrification planning in March 2019. A similar training was conducted in Aceh province in June 2019.
