ICED UPDATES JANUARY 2020

USAID Program Implemented by Tetra Tech

USAID Mobilized Investment Tops $1.5 billion

As of December 31, 2019, USAID ICED II advisory services to 58 projects resulted in $1.58 billion in financing and 427 MW of installed generation capacity. Of the total investment, 69.3% came through advisory to PLN, 22.4% to financial institutions, and 8.3%  to project developers. An additional 311 MW of the projects that reached financial closure are expected to be installed by the end of 2020. The 427 MW of installed capacity will meet the needs of an estimated 3.1 million customers.

USAID Supports Indonesia Power Sector

USAID Indonesia Clean Energy Development II (ICED II) hosted two important visits from USAID Indonesia Mission Director and USAID’s Senior Energy Advisor from its Bureau for Asia in Washington DC to the 72 MW Tolo Wind Power Plant in Jeneponto, South Sulawesi. The visits observed State Electricity Company’s (PLN) effort in integrating variable renewable energy (wind and solar photovoltaic) to the Sulawesi grid.

Improved Performance of Small Island Isolated Grid with Solar PV

PLN promoted the benefits of island grid improvement demonstration project to Government of Indonesia’s officials during a site visit to Sumba Timur. In collaboration with PLN, USAID ICED II implemented a demonstration project of automatic dispatch system (ADS) control system that has successfully stabilized power quality on PLN’s Sumba Timur’s power grid while maximizing the input from an operating solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant. As follow up, PLN organized a knowledge sharing session on smart grid, where USAID ICED II presented the case of the ADS pilot demonstration to PLN audience. PLN acknowledged the successful work and expressed their interest to replicate the ADS and grid monitoring system in other isolated grids

Building Banks Capacity in Renewable Energy Projects

USAID ICED II continues the effort to build the capacity of its partners, the financial services institutions, in reviewing project funding applications and investment opportunities. BCA, a leading Indonesian commercial bank, enjoyed two trainings on rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) technology and financing and
on environment-related documents for renewable energy project development
. These documents are requirements in financing evaluation process in banks. ICED II has provided training to 297 bank loan and credit officers since 2015.

Local Government Energy and Electrification Planning

Sound energy planning at the provincial level will help local governments manage their energy sector better and support development of renewable energy projects. USAID ICED II supports South Sulawesi province to finalize their provincial energy plan (RUED-P). Through a series of focused group discussions, South Sulawesi province aligned their energy plan draft with updated provincial medium-term development plan and discussed the model and matrix program of energy supply and demand modelling.
