USAID Indonesia Clean Energy Development II (ICED II) hosted the visit of USAID Mission Director Ryan Washburn to South Sulawesi on January 22, 2020. During his visit, Ryan Washburn learned about USAID technical assistance to State Electricity Company (PLN) for power system planning and operations in Sulawesi, with an emphasis on integrating variable types of renewable energy (i.e., wind and solar PV power plants) into Indonesia’s power system. This is USAID’s commitment in supporting the Government of Indonesia to achieve its national renewable energy targets and to expand electricity access in Indonesia.
The USAID Mission Director also visited the 72 Megawatt (MW) Tolo Wind Power Plant in Jeneponto, South Sulawesi developed by Vena Energy and owned by Global Infrastructure Partners (USA). USAID ICED II conducted a power system impact study for PLN the results of which paved the way for PLN approval of the project. Tolo wind farm began commercial operations in March 2019 and has been providing electricity to more than 200,000 people. The USAID Mission Director stated that the kind of work that USAID ICED II is doing is helping PLN and the Indonesian power sector facilitate investment opportunities in renewable energy.
